Abstract The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of a vegetarian diet with soy protein on glucose metabolism and insulin response in women with diabetes mellitus. Twenty-one patients were enrolled over a period of 1 wk. During the first 6 mo of study, all patients received a control diet composed of meat and vegetable protein (1 g of soy protein/d). For 3 mo of the intervention, patients consumed a vegan (100 g soy protein daily; diet Adderall from canada online 1) or vegetarian (100 g soy protein with 0 meat protein/d; diet 2) with soy powder and flax. Insulin measurements were made before and during each diet period after 3 mo. Dietary adherence was quantified by daily intake during the intervention and 3 months after the conclusion of diet. During intervention, 24 h insulin profiles exhibited an increase compared to the control and 3 months after the end of intervention, insulin profile showed no changes. In contrast, glucose metabolism profiles did not indicate an increase relative to the control diet. However, after 3 mo, there were improvements in plasma glucose levels on both diet groups after adjusting for weight and body mass index. These data suggest that a vegan or vegetarian diet rich in animal protein and with a high fiber content can enhance glucose metabolism by reducing the amount of dietary carbohydrates and increasing the intake of foods rich in plant proteins. Methods
Participants
